As we approach the year’s end, let us look forward to a season of new beginnings and new hopes. Let’s start by getting in touch with our spirit. A thorough soul searching will lead us to knowing what to focus on in the coming year. It will be good to ask ourselves what we are and what we really want from life.
We’ve always been told that we can’t change what we don’t see. Self-awareness is the process of acknowledging not only our strengths, but our weaknesses as well. Getting in touch with yourself involves listening to what your body and spirit are saying and acting on what you hear. How do you practice self-awareness?
First, you should reflect on who you are and who you’d like to be. While it’s important to notice your faults and weaknesses, it’s equally important to acknowledge your strengths. When you know yourself well, you will be more capable of bringing change into your life.
When you do real soul searching, you’ll find the many character traits that make you unique. Start off by focusing on the positive. This will embolden you to face the less favourable ones that may cause you to give up on your journey to self-discovery too early.
On the other hand, when evaluating your strengths, don’t let your ego get the best of you. If you put more emphasis on one over the other, you can’t possibly get a realistic picture of yourself. Until you deal with the truth of who you really are, you can never become the person you want to be.
Give value to what you like and dislike. Too often, people make life-altering choices without taking their personal needs into account. Before you embark on goals for your future, draw a clear line between what you really want and what you can live without.
Consult your loved ones. Talk to people who know you best and are not afraid to tell you what they really think of you. Ask them to be completely honest with you and be prepared to hear their opinions. You may not be your own best judge of character, so never argue with other people’s perceptions of who you are. Take their opinions into account so you’ll get a more realistic picture of yourself. Self-awareness is a crucial part of change. If you want to move forward, begin with real acceptance of who you really are.
